Jesus has Authority to Free and Forgive—from Matthew 8:28-8:8
How will you respond to Jesus? Not only does Jesus teach like none other, nature obeys His commands. He heals the sick, and tells the wind and waves to settle down (Matthew 7:28-8:27). Matthew’s gospel is setting forth God’s Messiah, Jesus; the unique, all-authoritative One. What else can this Guy do? Will you believe He controls the spirit realm and can even do only what God can–forgive sins!? Will you banish Him, feeling threatened (8:34), blaspheme Him (9:3), or bow before Him in humility (9:8)? “Go away,” “Get Him,” or “Glory to God”?
“At that, the whole town went out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their region. So he got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own town. Just then some men brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven.”
“At this, some of the scribes said to themselves, “He’s blaspheming!” Perceiving their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil things in your hearts? For which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then he told the paralytic, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.” So he got up and went home. When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck and gave glory to God, who had given such authority to men.” (Matthew 8:34-9:8 –CSB)
Poetic license alert! You can almost hear Jesus’ disciples grousing: “Of all places to land the boat! First, our get-away, rest-time trip across the lake was disrupted by a storm. (We suspect He knew about, maybe even planned it.) Now, we come ashore to a satanic squall; wild men from the graveyard! (We think He had a hand in this too.) We had seen His authority over disease and nature, now He displayed His power over demons, and that He can forgive sins? Were the scribes or demons right–blasphemer or God’s Son to glorify? Were these encounters for them or us–our faith?
