Meaningfully Using “The Lord’s / Disciples’ Prayer”—from Matthew 6:9-13
Find the theme: “Don’t hurt the family name! Be respectful, this is a cemetery. Don’t desecrate the flag. Take off your hat, put your hand over your heart, stand up for . . .” We rightfully hallow–treat with reverence and respect–certain places, things: Ground Zero, Pearl Harbor. How much more should we hallow our Lord, His name? In Jesus’ “seminar on prayer”–the Lord’s Prayer–the first petition helps get out hearts right as we ask that we treat Him right.
Jesus Prepares Our Hearts to Pray:(Matthew 6:1-8)
Don’t pray like hypocrites; for the praise of others
Pray in private to your Father: He sees and hears you! (Psalm 139)
Don’t pray Like the world, the godless
Know that your Father knows your needs, and cares (Psalm 103:13, 14)
He Begins by Leading us to Our Heavenly Father:
Be God-Focused: worship and submission, the first requests (vs. 9, 10)
Be God-Dependent: as a child on a Father; the last requests (vs. 11-13)
The Father; OUR Father: Personal, Provider, Protective of Family (Luke 11:33)
THE ONE in Heaven: Exalted Father of Jesus, King! (John 14:1-6; 17:1-3; Revelation 3-5)
Our First Request: God, We Want You to be Reverenced
Hallowed be Your Name: not simply an observation (i.e. “holy is your name”)
May Your Name be rightfully respected, You be treated as Holy
“may your name be honored” (NET Bible) “be honored as holy” (HCSB)
Ηαγιαζο: Sanctify, hallow, reverence, treat Him as holy. No other gods (Exodus 20)
Ονομα: “name”; it represents Him, His character; a person in their entirety
e.g. burning a flag (a symbol) = disrespecting and dishonoring what it stands for
“Not take it in vain” (Exodus 20); treat as empty, hollow. About that “OMG,” Jeez . . .
Note the Assumption: His name, He, is not being treated as holy. Noticed that?
This is a plea, a passion, a first priority (cf. Matthew 6:33)
“Father, I want You to get the rightful, righteous respect that’s Yours.”
To HIM “be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Doing Our Part! Hallowing the Lord with Our:
> Hearts: “fear, respect Him” (Proverbs 1:7); “sanctify Jesus as Lord” (1 Peter 3:15)
> Hands: “Do everything for God’s glory” (1 Corinthians 10:31); “whatever you do . . .” (Colossians 3:17)
> Words: Don’t use His Holy name in empty ways (Exodus 20; Isaiah 6; James 3:9, 10)
> Does dishonor of Him grieve you? See “righteous Lot” in 2 Peter 2:7, 8
> Are you flippant or too familiar in your prayers? “Guard your steps when you go to the house of God . . . Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.” (Ecclesiastes 5:1-2 –ESV)
> Do you purposefully seek to reverence, respect God–His name–with your life?
> Assignments: Hear how you use, say God’s names, treat Him. Pray about it, using the Lord’s Prayer daily, slowly, thoughtfully.
